Let’s talk about why therapy is for everyone

I was recently picking up a Marketplace purchase from a local mum and we got to talking about what we do for work. When I mentioned I worked in mental health, she shared with me that she has seen a psychologist for many years and that she thinks, in many ways it is just as important as a regular physical health check-up. I couldn’t agree more! Many people think you need to be in crisis to see a psychologist, but that’s simply not true. While psychologists are great at helping during tough times, they can also support you in so many other ways. Whether you’re facing challenges or just want to better understand yourself, therapy can be a powerful tool for personal growth, emotional health, and overall wellness.

You don’t need to feel like you’re at rock bottom to benefit from therapy. In fact, it can be helpful at any stage in life. Here are just a few reasons why seeing a psychologist might be a great idea:

  • Managing stress: Stress is a really normal part of being human. However, at times it can all become quite overwhelming and difficult to manage. A psychologist can help you learn better ways to handle it.

  • Improving your relationships: Whether it’s your partner, family, friends, or coworkers, relationships can be tricky. Therapy can help you communicate better and strengthen these connections.

  • Personal growth: Therapy is a safe and unique space where you get to reflect on your life, understand your patterns, and explore your values, needs and desires without judgement.

  • Finding clarity: If you’re feeling stuck or unsure about what’s next, talking to a psychologist can help you make sense of things and move forward.

Even though therapy can be incredibly helpful, a lot of people hold back from seeking support. Here are some of the reasons why:

  • Thinking your problems aren’t “big enough”: You don’t need to be in deep distress to see a psychologist. All struggles are valid. I had a very wise young person share with me, “it doesn’t matter how deep the puddle, anyone can drown”.

  • Worrying about being judged: There’s still a stigma around mental health, but psychologists are there to support, not to judge.

  • Cost concerns: Therapy can be expensive, but investing in your mental health is one of the best decisions you can make. Fortunately, there are referral options available that can help ease some of this strain. Please do let us know if this is a concern for you and we can chat through options.

  • Not knowing where to start: Finding the right therapist might seem overwhelming at first, but there are resources out there to help guide you.

  • Feeling like you should handle it alone: It’s okay (and human) to need support, nobody has to do everything on their own.

Seeing a psychologist is a brave and positive step toward understanding yourself and living a fulfilling and healthy life. Therapy is about creating a safe, welcoming space to explore your thoughts and feelings with someone you can trust.
